General view of the Lantang Lirung glacier, Langtang Valley, Nepal, on the 29th May 2009
According to Dorothea Stumm, a glaciologist at the Nepal-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, this massive hanging glacier cracked when an earthquake struck at 11.56am on the 25th April 2015. The ice formed a cloud that gathered snow and rocks and then funnelled down the mountain, burying the village of Langtang and partially destroying Kinjin Gompa village, and creating an enormous pressurised blast. 400 residents of Langtang village and up to 100 trekkers staying there are believed to have been killed.
